Beating addictions IS possible…6 tips to help

Why can’t I break free of it?

Once we recognise we have a problem – like an addiction – we all want a solution. Whatever the addiction is, we decide it’s time to stop it, to get control back of our lives. Because being addicted means not being in control of some part of our behaviour. So we decide to take our power back and stop it, but that’s somewhere between incredibly difficult and completely impossible. We try – we fail – we beat ourselves up about it. We usually find comfort in the addiction because that is what we use when we feel stressed or bad about ourselves. And so the cycle continues…

Addiction is a lonely place…

It’s easy to see how people suffering with an addiction feel isolated. Society looks down on people with addictions. It feels like failure to be all consumed by something we can’t break free of. Many more people have addictions than we realise because they’re deliberately hidden – from family, friends to avoid criticism. No one wants to appear weak or out of control. Yet the word addiction comes from the Latin word meaning to be enslaved by, and slaves don’t have control. So we continue battling/failing/hating ourselves for failing in a vicious circle that solves nothing. Struggling alone…

Yet there are things we can do to start making changes for ourselves. They don’t have to be big, any change that moves you towards being free of your addiction is a positive thing and should be praised, valued and appreciated. So consider these steps to start your journey to freedom…

6 tips to beat an addiction…

There are many steps to finding your way back to being in control, here’s a beginning;

  • BE HONEST WITH YOURSELF ABOUT THE EXTENT OF THE PROBLEM. It’s easy to minimalize it and deny the seriousness of it. Lying to ourselves is common when we do things we know are wrong or bad in some way. Honesty helps.
  • SEEK HELP. Start with whoever you feel safest with – your doctor, partner, family, a friend. Talking honestly and openly relieves the burden of secrecy which is itself exhausting. They may have suggestions of other people or groups that can help. Consider hypnotherapy with me, or finding yourself an experienced therapist who understands addiction.
  • START THINKING ABOUT WHAT LIFE WOULD BE LIKE WITHOUT THE ADDICTION. Seems like a small step but it’s key to getting that different life. The more you imagine it and how it would work and feel, the good things about it, the more your brain will start realising how things could be. Lean into your healing process. Imagine success.
  • STOP BEATING YOURSELF UP. Beating yourself up hasn’t worked because it never does. So think about this time as your preparation time for your addiction free life.
  • BE KIND TO YOURSELF. That means understanding you’re undertaking something really hard, which won’t be achieved in a day. It will take time to unlearn and create a different life, addiction free. Treat this as your learning time – learn what is behind your addiction – what is it giving you – what does it help you ignore or hide from..?
  • START PLANNING – SMALL STEPS. Start preparing for a different way of living. Accept you are human so will make mistakes and have lapses and that is part of your progress. Miracles don’t happen overnight – they are the culmination of many small steps. You are the only expert on you. You know what would help you, what other enjoyable things you could add to your life to reward yourself positively for doing this great thing.

How does hypnotherapy help with addictions?

Hypnotherapy supports your work in retraining your brain to function without the addiction. Counselling and therapy work with the conscious brain, but the subconscious is where the addiction has a strong hold. That automatic response of reaching for the same old thing which has become your normal is controlled by your subconscious and hypnotherapy helps retrain that. We’ll also explore your coping mechanisms, supports and ways you can help yourself make the changes you want. Check out my reviews from people with addiction issues to see how positive others have found the experience.

How do I get started with Hypnotherapy?
